The former Medical Director of Braithwaite Memorial Hospital in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Dr. Bernard Aprioku has urged retirees to always engage in activities in order to maintain good health.

The Consultant Anaesthetist made the call in a chat with The Tide at a one-day free medical outreach organized by the Wakirike Medical Doctors Association at Ogu General Hospital recently.

He explained that retirement does not mean of  idleness adding that retirees should always involve in exercise that would promote  good health so as to stay alive.

Dr. Aprioku therefore called on retirees in Rivers State, to check their daily habits and decide on the one that would help to improve their good health.

The former Medical Director frowned at some civil servants who falsified their age in order to stay in service stressing that the consequences are enormous.

“It is better to come out honourably but if you continue while you are due for retirement, you will have a question to answer before God”, he said.

Reports have it that sitting idle after retirement would have negative impact on the health of retirees and advised them to always engage in activities that would help build their strength, flexibility, cardiovascular health and balance.

They also stressed the need for retirees to take  good foods particularly fruits and vegetables and find ways to stimulate the brain by learning new things as well as have enough sleep.
