INEC Gets Land For Staff Quarters
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been given two plots of land for which to build houses for its staff at the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Abuja.
The FCT Minister, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed gave the immediate approval for the allocation of the two plots to INEC last week in Abuja when the chairman of the electoral commission, Professor Attahiru Jega paid him a courtesy visit.
Although, the FCT Minister did not however, disclosed where the housing project will be located, but he, stated that the housing scheme when completed, would enable INEC to be truly Independent and as well encourage the electoral body and its staff to truelly discharge its constitutional responsibilities effectively.
The FCT Minister also charged the commission to guard its autonomy as well as ensure that the maintenance of its independence is sustained, and that in such situation, the people will accord the commission its respect in the scheme of things.
According to him, while a plot of the landed property will be used to provide houses for the INEC chairman and other principal officers of the commission, including its various commissioners, the second plot will be used to provide houses for the core staff of the commission.
Responding, the INEC boss, Professor Attahiru Jega thanked the FCT Minister for the property, and stated that it has become very imperative to have such residential quarters for INEC staff at the FCT.
