Councillors Escape Death From Armed Robbers
Ten councillors of Nsukka Local Government on Monday narrowly escaped death from armed robbers who manhandled them around Egede in Enugu-9th Mile express road while coming from Enugu.
The secretary of Nsukka council, Mr Ofobuike Igwebueze, who confirmed this to the newsmen in Nsukka on Tuesday, said the councillors were robbed of their personal belongings including mobile phones.
“They went to Enugu to see the wife of the chairman, Mrs Grace Ugwu who recently delivered triplets in a hospital in Enugu. We thank God none of them was injured only that they lost their personal belongings to the robbers,’’ he said.
Some of the councillors robbed included Mr Olive Agbo, the Leader and Mr Henry Ezema, Deputy Leader.
Ofobuike said that it was Mr Tony Ugwu, the Council Chairman, who contacted the police when he made a U-turn as he was following the councillors legislative bus.
“When the chairman saw the robbers he quickly turned back and alerted police at 9th mile, but before the arrival of the police the robbers had zoomed off,” he said
He urged the police to be pro-active wondering how a robbery can happen for an hour in such an express road without police intervention.
“Though the police has been trying to contain security challenges in the country there is need for them to put more efforts. Such express road should be constantly patrolled by police,” he said.
When contacted, the Nsukka Area Commander Danjuma Lawal said that he had heard of the incident, but not officially and might not be in a position to comment on it since it happened outside his jurisdiction.
