Chime Donates Beddings To Prison
The Enugu State Government has donated a total of 250 double bunker beds, 500 mattresses, 500 bed sheets and 500 pillows to the Enugu Prisons, as a means of actualising its commitment to improving the welfare of prison inmates.
Speaking last weekend while presenting the items to the Comptroller of Prisons in the state, the state Governor, Barrister Sullivan Chime, said that the beds and beddings would be used to furnish the hostel built by the state government for the inmates of the prison in Enugu.
Governor Chime who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Amechi Okolo, stated that the building and furnishing was geared towards touching the lives of the inmates.
The state chief executive who was touched by the condition of the inmates, appealed to the prison authorities to endeavour to use the items for the benefit of the inmates.
Receiving the items on behalf of the inmates, the Comptroller of Prisons in the state, Mr. Chris Ntewo, thanked Governor Chime for his special interest and care for the welfare of the inmates since assumption of office.
Mr. Ntewo, who was represented by Mr. Mustapha Attah, noted that the Enugu State Maximum Secondary Prison in 2007 received tremendous charity and attention by the Governor and prayed that God would bless his tenure.
He, however, noted with dismay that the Enugu State Prison built in 1915 with 638 capacity now had 1,471 inmates and appealed to Governor Chime to grant amnesty to the condemned prisoners as was done in Anambra, Imo, Delta and Ebonyi States.
The state comptroller also appealed to the governor to look into the plight of inmates awaiting trial for 14 years now without going to court and stressed that it was not their duty to reform awaiting trial prisoners.
Mr. Ntewo noted that some of the inmates were indigenes, who were accused and found guilty.
He said that most of the inmates were Enugu State indigenes and that even those who are not from the state were under the governor’s custody, which made him show signs of compassion on them by touching them in the areas of reformation.
