Bauchi ADP Introduces ‘Striga’ Weed Control Technology
The Bauchi State Agricultural Development Programme (BSADP) has introduced some weed control technology that will help to curb the menace of striga or witch-weed in some parts of the state.
Dr Iliyasu Gital, the BSADP General Manager, disclosed this on yesterday in Bauchi in an interview.
He said that five local government areas of the state — Bauchi, Alkaleri, Dass, Toro and Ganjuma — had been selected to commence the implementation of the pilot phase of the weeds control programme.
He said that 25 extension agents had been trained on the application of the new technology, which he said, was imported from Kenya.
According to him, the extension agents had selected 20 farmers each within their areas of jurisdiction to be trained on the application of the new technology.
Gital told newsmen that each of the 20 farmers had also established demonstration farms.
He expressed the hope that the application of the new technology would help reduce the menace of striga, which had devastated maize, cow peas and sorghum farms in the five local government areas.
