Seven Year-Old Onoja Thrills Crowd At Chess Game

A  seven year-old Chess sensation from Benue State, Iyefun Onoja has thrilled the crowd at the on-going Garden City Unity Games 2011.

Little Onoja is just few games away from notching her first gold and has won four of her games, including a silver medalist at the last National Sports Festival in Kaduna.

From indication, the chess protégé has about two games to win a medal but she has remained humble and shy as she spoke to reporters last weekend.

The surprise, according to some of her fans, is that this is the first time she is participating at the National Sports Festival and any other competition so far.

She and her state counterpart, Mercy Oduh are the youngest amongst the contingents, but Oduh has crashed out after few games, while Onoja still remains resilient fighting the heavy weights all through.

Asked how she feels, Onoja declared, “I’am trying  to pay for both Oduh and myself and I’am enjoying my game so far.”

A chess players from Edo State, Millicent Aigbogho said of Onoja, “it’s very encouraging that a girl of her age is playing at this level. She should keep her game up.”

An older counterpart from the same state with her, Simeon Ogun disclosed to The Tide Sports that Onoja is currently on a perfect score and the highest in her board for now.

Asked how she would fell if she finally wins a medal Onoja said she would give her medal to the State, while expressing the believe she would definitely win.
