The Rivers State Government has directed the Rivers State Water Board to commence the immediate reconnection of water lines to homes at Eagles Island and the Elekahia Housing Estate, Port Harcourt.
The Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, Miss Patricia Simon-Hart who said this during a meeting with the senior staff of the ministry and the board, said that the move was to ensure that, residents of Eagle Island and Elekahia Housing Estate benefitted maximally from the existing water facilities in their areas, as the primary stations especially at Eagle Island has the capacity to supply uninterrupted processed water to every part of the island and environs.
The commissioner who also setup a taskforce to ensure the actualisation of the directive within the next two months, urged the board to provide the facilities for the reconnection exercise.
On the problem of water borne diseases in the coastal part of the state, Miss Hart said that the ministry was making efforts to ensure that processed water was available to all citizens of the state pointing out that the only way to fight water borne diseases in the coastal areas was to ensure that processed water got to the people.
The commissioner also said that the ministry had concluded a feasibility study on the Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor water project, pointing out that the project would be executed in phases.
