Police Canvass Public Support To Reduce Crime In Aba
The Police in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia have renewed their call for support from the public to reduce crime in the city.
Alhaji Rabiu Dayi, the Area Commander, made the appeal in an interview with newsmen in Aba.
He said the security agencies with the support of the public had since November sustained a fight to reduce cases of kidnap, armed robbery and other crimes in the commercial city.
Dayi, however, said some people were trying to tarnish the image of the police with frivolous allegations in recent times.
He gave an assurance that the Police would continue to carry out its duty within the ambit of the law.
He refuted an allegation of torture that led to the death of a suspect, a 60 year-old man, Monday Nwakamma of Umuocho village, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area.
According to Dayi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, the suspect died of heart attack, as disclosed in an autopsy report.
He said the kidnappers used the suspects’ premises as camping site.
Dayi said a notorious kidnapper, Enyeribe Akwuruoha,currently facing trial was arrested in company of Nwakamma and others after rescuing a kidnapped girl in his premises.
He said the suspect on reaching the command for interrogation, slumped when a victim, who was that allegedly kidnapped in his compound, was brought to confront him.
Dayi said Nwakamma was rushed to a Police clinic and later to the General Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
Meanwhile, Nwakamma’s family had since sued the Police, claiming N1 billion as damages.
The suit was instituted on their behalf at a High Court in Aba, by their lawyer, Mr Victor Nwugo.
