Police Beef Up Security At Civic Centre

Following the breakdown of law and order at the Civic Centre, one of the venues of the ongoing 17th National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt, police beefed up security.

A protest and a fight which ensued between Dambe (Traditional Boxing) supporters on Monday and Tuesday almost resulted to a stampede.

Our correspondent reports that the number of police seen yesterday at the centre was three times more especially at the Dambe and Kokowa (Traditional Wrestling) bouts.

National Coordinator of Dambe, John Gana confirmed to reporters  that it was the earlier misunderstanding between states’ supporters that was responsible for the heavy security at the centre.

He said that there were no biases so far in the judgment of referees adding that most of the supporters were only there to foment trouble.
