Abia State Commissioner of Police, Bala Hassan said yesterday that residents of the state should not panic as the police are up to the task of any security challenges.

“We have deployed the five Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) in out fleet as well as officers and men to strategic places, conducting stop-and-search on all vehicles,’’ Hassan told newsmen in Umuahia.

“We have also deployed special team that will monitor our men on the field to make sure that they comply with the directives of the command,” the commissioner said.

He explained that the police took the measure to ensure that kidnapping, robberies and other social ills did not resurface in the state.

Speaking in the same vein, Mr Boni Iwuoha, the Media Adviser to Governor Theodore Orji, told newsmen that the state was calm.

“Abia is peaceful, quiet, calm and the people are going about their lawful businesses but what is happening is that preemptive steps are being taken by the government and the people to ensure that there is safety and that no group takes the people unawares,’’ he said.

Iwuoha told newsmen that the governor had earlier met with stakeholders in the state on security situation, stressing that “what is important is that Orji has galvanised the people to be security conscious.

He said that although the issue of law and order was the primary responsibility of law enforcement agents, the governor, being the chief security officer of the state, embarked on the consultations with leaders of thought to ensure that all braced up to the challenges.

Iwuoha explained that “one expects that at the end, the result would guarantee safety of lives and property of citizens of the state.
