Kung-Fu: Rivers Adds Another Four Gold Medals
Rivers State yesterday won another four gold medals and two silver medals at the Kung-Fu event at the on-going 17th National Sports Festival, tagged Garden City Games 2011.
In the sport which is taking place at the Port Harcourt City Local Government hall, Moscow Road, Bose Adegbola won a gold medal in the -75 kg category, Kafeyai Okalawo in the -65 kg and Nworia Juliet won gold too in the -70kg. Anthonia Aka won silver in the -52kg, all in the female category.
Henry David also won a gold medal in -52kg in the male category.
As it stands, Rivers Kung-Fu team has clinched seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals.
In an interview shortly after his team won the medals, the Chief Coach of Rivers Kung-Fu team, Ngozi Frank Owabie, expressed optimism that his athletes would clinch the highest medals in the sport at the end of competition.
“It is not my making, but I give God the glory first of all. We really prepared for this festival.
“We started training about eight months, before other athletes went into camping”, Owabie said.
The chief coach explained that they prepared for a long time, noting that the success story can be attributed to selfless service, determination, discipline and dedication to the sports.
He further expressed joy over the impressive performances from his athletes.
“I am very happy that today my team is making the state proud. I am sure we will also clinch the remaining four to five medals at stake”, he added.
Owabie, used the forum to urge coaches to show commitment in training athletes under them, saying that financial benefit can only come when they succeed.
