DO Not Abandon Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, SWAN Urges RSG

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN has called on the Rivers State Government to ensure the completion and adequate maintenance of the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, the showpiece complex that hosted most of the events of the 17th National Sports Festival.

The call was part of the communiqué SWAN issued at the end of its extra-ordinary full council meeting in Port Harcourt at the weekend.

SWAN noted that though the complex was not fully completed, facilities there were state of the art and should be adequately maintained to ensure that its benefits are fully derived.

The meeting commended the government and people of Rivers State for successfully hosting the Games and lauded Governor Chibuike Amaechi for providing the funds needed for the fiesta.

The National Sports Commission, NSC was also called upon to adhere strictly to the timing of the National Sports Festival and ensure that mechanisms are put in place to host the biennial event as and when due.

States were equally charged to establish sports commissions and revive school sports for effective sports development in the country.

SWAN further challenged the National Assembly to pass lelgislations that will create enabling environment for sports to thrive and  encourage private sector participation in sports development.
