Bayelsa Lawmakers Disagree Over Dep Gov’s Signature

The list of Commissioner-nominees sent to the Bayelsa House of Assembly by Gov. Timipre Sylva on Tuesday threw the House into a stormy session.

Some members alleged anomaly in the signing of the list by the State Deputy Governor, Werinipre Seibarugu.

Our correspondent reports that four of the lawmakers, the Chief Whip, Konbowei Benson (Southern Ijaw 4), Peter Akpe (Sagbama 1), Victor Atakei (Brass 1) and Dubou Edwin (Southern Ijaw 2) protested against the list.

The grouse of the four was that the list ought to be authenticated by the Governor, rather than the Deputy.

The lawmakers said in order to avoid any procedural error by the House, the contentious list should be sent back to the Governor for authentication.

But other members countered the argument, stressing that there was nothing wrong in the use of the Deputy Governor’s signature.

The Speaker of the House, Nestor Binabo, however, fixed July 12 for the screening.
