Africa Youth Junior Weightlifting Championships Postponed

The Weightlifting Federation of Africa (WFA) has postponed indefinitely the Africa Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships earlier scheduled for Uganda this month, an official of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation said.

Uche Onwumeh, Secretary, Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) newsmen in Lagos that the postponement was due to the lingering crisis in Libya.

The WFA has its headquarters in Libya which had been dogged by political crisis in the past three months.

Onwumeh said that the postponement had become inevitable because of the situation in Libya.

According to her, the decision on the organisation of the championships is supposed to be taken at the headquarters in Libya but the crisis has prevented this.

The latest postponement will be the second of such as the championships was earlier scheduled for May 5 to May 15.

Onwumeh said that in spite of the postponement, the federation would continue to train its athletes and also use the National Sports Festival, Garden City Games, to scout for more talent who could feature at the competition.
