A’Ibom Leads In Weight Lifting … … Fidelis Set New Festival Record

Akwa Ibom State contingent to the 17th National Sports Festival, tagged Garden City Games 2011are in pole position with five gold medals and four bronze medals on day one of weightlifting competition.

Chineye Fidelis of the Akwa Ibom State team set a new festival record in the 53kg snatch,lifting 85KG, beating the record set by Patience Lawal of Kwara State 82.5KG at the 2006 festival in Abeokuta.

The Akwa Ibom lifter did not stop there, but went on to set another new record in the Clean and Jerk,53KG, beating the old record set by Patience Lawal of Kwara State 112KG to lift 120KG.

Rivers are second on the medals table with two gold and one silver while Delta are third with one gold, two silver and one bronze medal.Cross River with one gold, one silver and one bronze.

FCT won one silver and one bronze medal,Niger with one silver, Ogun has three silver while. Kano and Lagos have two and one bronze medals respectively.

A total of nine gold medals, nine silver and bronze has been won respectively.

A total of 35 States and the FCT were in attendance while Gombe State was absent.
