‘Nigeria Has Huge Potential In Beach Volleyball’
Mr Samuel Timothy, the first Nigerian beach volleyball referee to be certified by the Confederation of Africa Volleyball (CAVB), has said that Nigeria has great potential in the game.
Timothy said this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos. He said that the recent training for referees’ certification in Namibia had prepared the participants for the Continental Beach Volleyball Cup.
He said the course was part of CAVB’s strategic plans to develop officials who would foster the development of the game in Africa.
“The course is a vital step in CAVB’s preparation for the zonal phase of the Continental Cup and part of the new qualification guidelines of the Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) for the 2012 Olympics Games,” Timothy said.
The referee, who attended the course in Windhoek, Namibia, in March, said that the first three days of the training focused on theory, while the remaining three days focused purely on the practical aspects.
“I love volleyball; as far back as I can remember, I have always wanted to be involved in beach volleyball. It will be a dream realised on the day I receive my FIVB (world governing body) badge,” Timothy said.
He said that a FIVB Beach Volleyball and Refereeing Commission member, Jose Casanova of Portugal, and Jeff Brehaut of UK conducted the course.
