‘Handball, Fast Regaining Lost Glory’
The first vice President of Handball Federation of Nigeria, Hon Holab Akinsika, says the game of handball is fast regaining its lost glory following its high standard of display in the on-going 17th National sports festival.
Hon Akinsiku who said this is an exclusive interview with Tidesports in Port Harcourt said that the game of handball used to be the second most popular games in Nigeria, but the game however lost its glory in the mid 90’s owing to bad leadership.
He said that with the present crop of Board members at the federation level, the game is bouncing back to its reckoning.
“We have taken the ball by the horn to ensure that we bring back the game to its old glory, and now handball “talking its rightful place in the committee of games” he said.
Hon Akinsiku who also doubles as the chairman Ondo State handball association and the south west zonal chairman of the handball federation of Nigeria also said that the impressive standard of the game in the on-going festival has shown that Nigeria has come of age in the game.
In his words, “you see the standard and the standard of performance has been very impressive and know that we are going to rule the world very soon in handball because in the last four years the performance of handball in Nigeria has been fantastic” stressing that the Nigerian Handball team has been coming back from Sweden with medals.
He also said that the Port Harcourt games has seta very high standard for other handball, stressing that it now beholves other states planning to the festival in future to emulate.
In his words, “in any judgement it has been superb, if is an eye opener for the state that will be hosting the game in the next festival.
“Port Harcourt has already set a standard that every other state should book forward to”, he concluded.
