The Trade Union Congress (TUC), has appealed to the federal government to make good Health Services and Safety of Nigerian workers top priority so as to ensure improved productivity.

Rivers State chairman of TUC, Mr Chika Onuegbu, made the call in his keynote address at a two-day workshop organised by the Nigeria Institute of Safety Professionals in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, over the weekend.

Mr Onuegbu also wants the federal government to review the existing safety laws in the country, pointing out that the measure would promote owners efficiency and productivity.

“We recommend that the federal government through the National Assembly should pass the Employee Compensation Act, 2006,” he stated.

According to him, if the government through the National Assembly passed the occupational Health Facility Bill, the Nigeria Institute of Professional Safety Bill and the bill reviewing the Factory Act, the safety of the work force would be enhanced.

While emphasising on the importance of the health of workers, the TUC boss declared the preparedness of the union to partner with the National Assembly to ensure the smooth passage of the remaining safety laws in Nigeria.
