Siasia, Super Eagles Test Might Against Argentina
Nigerian Coach, Samson Siasia will this evening at the National Stadium, Abuja have the opportunity to test-run his team, the Super Eagles against a grade A International opposition, Argentina, as he conrtinues to build his squad for the country.
Though the encounter is only a friendly, it is a platform to be used to assess a couple of players against a quality opposition, as well as try to get some measures of vengeance against Diego Maradona’s kinsmen who have edged Nigeria in many encounters.
For Siasia, a victory this evening will go a long way to assuage some disappointments at the hands of the Argentines, especially, at the USA’94 World Cup, 2005 WYC IN Holland and the Olympic Games, Beijing 2008.
The Argentine team, which arrived the country is without the mercurial Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and Di Maria of Real Madrid. But the team being captained by Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta has enough quality to pose serious challenge to the Super Eagles.
However, the result of the match, which many Nigerians will want to be in Eagles favour may not count as much as the lessons to be learnt. But Siasia and his wards must guard against the scenario when Brazil, the last South American team to visit Abuja routed the Eagles, repeating itself.
The new depth, youth and spirit Siasia is trying to instill in the team are expected to be on display.
Home-based stars, Ekigho Ehiosun, Chibuzor Okonkwo and the foreign legion led by Mikel Obi, Joseph Yobo, Victor Anichebe, the Uche Brothers, Kalu and Ikechukwu among others must be able to hold their own today.
