The police in Rivers State say it has arrested a member of a kidnap gang which abducted a five year old child in Omoku in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state three years ago.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mr Ben Ugwuegbulam, said in a statement issued yesterday, that the suspect was arrested last Wednesday night at Ogbo Village in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of the state.
He said, prior to the arrest of the suspect whose name was given as Emeka Mishack, the officer in charge of the Omoku Police Division had on September 2, 2009 led a team of policemen to raid the camp of the gang where two members fled with injuries sustained from police bullets.
According to the statement, the suspect had confessed to the gang’s involvement in the alleged crime committed in 2009, while investigation was still on.
In another development, residents of the Ajara Topa neighbourhood of Badagry have been thrown into mourning over the beheading of a 14-year-old boy by some faceless assailants.
Our correspondent reports that there has been tension in the area since Thursday morning when some villagers found the headless body of the boy near Texaco filling station on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
The boy, an apprentice at a place close to the petrol station, had been declared missing by his family on Monday when he failed to return home.
Our correspondent reports that the headless body of the boy was discovered at the back of the filling station after an intensive search of the area.
There was increased tension in the area, as the church of a pastor, who was a suspected mastermind of the crime, was destroyed.
DSP Dankoli Mohammed, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Badagry Police Division, who confirmed the murder, said that the headless body of the boy was found, four days after he was reported missing by his parents.
“I can confirm the murder of the teenager who was beheaded, while his body was dumped at a location in Badagry,” he said.
DSP Desmond Obe, also of the Badagry Police Station, confirmed that a pastor was among the suspects currently in police custody undergoing interrogation.
Meanwhile, the corpse has been deposited at the morgue of an undisclosed hospital in Badagry, as the police continue their investigations.
The Tide recalls that similar incident occurred at Ikoga in Badagry last year when a teenager was killed, under the pretext that he hanged himself at the back of a house.
