Rivers Hauls Gold Medals In Kung Fu … Set For Cycling Medals, Today

Rivers State yesterday opened her medal account in the nascent 17th National Sports Festival, Garden City Games, 2011, having four gold, three silver and two bronze medals in the opening day of the Kung Fu event.

The medal winners include Ijeoma Ikeije, Adu Bankonle, Eweje Adeleye and Ademola Afolabi, gold medals, Eluagu Michael, Ebere Okebugwuru and Joy Mark, silver medals, while Amaka Onwuka and Tamara Ebitonmo won bronze.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Rivers State cyclist, Edward Osim as the Cycling 200 metres male event is decided today in Port Harcourt.

The cyclist won all his qualifying races comfortably yesterday and is seen as the favorite for the event’s ultimate medal.

Speaking after one of the preliminary races, Osim had said that his target would be to win gold in his races during the games.

“It is great to participate in the fiesta, I am happy that I qualified in the elimination series and hope to win laurels for Rivers State”, he said.

He advised other cyclists, who did not qualify for the 200 metres event not to give up but put in more effort to make impact in other cycling events later on.

Team Rivers has 15 athletes in the cycling event, eight males and seven female cyclists, two represented it in the 200 metres event.
