Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria (HEFRON) has explained that Primary Health Care (PHC) programme is not for the poor, but for everyone who lives close to a primary Health facility.

The South-West Zonal Programme Officer of HEFRON, Dr Titi Ipadeola who stated this dismissed the insinuations that Primary Healthcare Centres are for the poor, pointing out that the health centres only replaced dispensaries and maternity centres in the state.

According to him, “people still think that Primary Healthcare is for the poor. That is not true. The primary healthcare facility replaced the old dispensaries and maternity centres.”

Dr Ipadeola, stressed that Primary Health Centre being the closest to the community takes care of the primary health needs of the people in the local government areas.

He expressed dismay that after 30 years of its existence, the PHC is still being faced with misconceptions and insinuations from the people.

He observed that many people see PHC institutions as a place where health services are for the rural people only, explaining that the development poses danger to the primary healthcare delivery system of the government.

He used the opportunity to appeal to the people to take advantage of PHC facilities in their communities because of their proximity to the grassroots.
