With the commencement of the 17th National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged Garden City Games 2011 barely five days away, residents of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital cannot wait for the fiesta to kick off.

Most residents believe that the festival is an opportunity to showcase the new Rivers State to Nigeria and once again, prove that the state has what it takes to be one of the major hubs of the country.

To the youths, the festival will serve to rekindle their interest in sporting activities and leave excellent facilities for them to use in exploring their talents.

Speaking in an interview, Douglas Ogunu, a businessman resident in Port Harcourt said that the sports festival is a good omen to the state, especially at this time that the stat is undergoing renewal.

“The sport festival will put the state on the  front burner for at least two weeks and Nigerians would see the new face of the state. It is a good development and we cannot wait for the fiesta to commence”, said Ogunu.

Another resident, Cyril Odum, a businessman and sports enthusiast  said that the event will come with some business opportunities that would be to the benefit of Rivers people and other inhabitants.

He urged the people to comport themselves positively during the games, even as they try to exploit the games for economic benefits.

For youthful Obiandu Nyeche,  it will be exciting to behold the crème of young sportsmen and women in Nigeria in Port Harcourt  and have the benefit of inheriting all the facilities afterwards.

He wants Rivers contingents to be ready for fierce competition from states like Delta, Edo and Lagos, and ensure that they emerge overall winners at the end of the day.

The organisers of the festival, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and the state government were urged to take the issue of security during the games very seriously by most of those that spoke to the Tidesports in order to ensure a hitch free festival.
