Oyo Cyclists Grateful To Okorie, Promises Top Performance Garden City Gamess
The Oyo State cycling team have vowed to sweep medals at the National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt to show gratitude to the chairman of their association, Ndubuisi Okorie.
The cyclists, who have arrived Port Harcourt for the fiesta they were more determined than ever to excel.
According to them, the association’s chairman came to their rescue and volunteered to sponsor cyclists to the festival when the government ordered that the state’s contingent be downsized because of paucity of funds.
One of the cyclists who spoke on behalf of his colleagues on condition of anonymity said that the downsizing of the number of the state’s contingent greatly affected cycling.
“Our chairman’s gesture has really motivated us to excel at the Garden City Games,’’ the cyclists said.
It was learnt that 350 athletes were originally camped in preparation for the Games but on the instruction of the government the list was reduced to less than 200.
“We are full of thanks to Okorie who did not allow the downsizing of the earlier 350 athletes camped for the games to less than 200 to affect cycling athletes,’’ he added.
The cycling association chairman had also purchased new bicycles and repaired damaged bicycles.
