NDDC Tennis Tourney Throws-Up Talents

About four talents have been discovered from the just concluded 2nd edition of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Under-16 Tennis Championship held in Port Harcourt.

The competition witnessed the participation of over 150 Junior Tennis players from the nine states of the Niger Delta region.

Young talents discovered in the tournament tagged “Catch Them Young” include Augustine Ogirinya, from Cross River State, who emerged winner in the under 16 boys category, while Zainab Oladimeji, from Ondo State, under girls, Godsgift Timi, Rivers State and Sophier Ordu, Rivers State Under-12 girls category.

Speaking at the closing ceremony and award presentation, the Managing/Director/CEO of the NDDC, Mr. Chibuzor Ugwoha restated the commission’s commitment towards sports development in the Niger Delta region.

Mr. Ugwoha said that apart from creating opportunities for the young ones to develop, sports is also an instrument of social reengineering and integration.

He urged the young tennis players to remain focused and committed saying that if they (young players) put more effort and able to convert the opportunity, the sky will be their limit.

He thus commended the organisers for a good tournament and promised that the commission would continue the sponsorship of the tournament.

The NDDC, boss also charged winners to take their studies seriously as they focused on the sports.

Other sports sponsored by the NDDC, includes, swimming, traditional wrestling Golf, Basket ball, Volleyball and handball.

It would be recalled that the first edition produced three talents who are now being ground for professional tennis.
