Commercial drivers operating in Rivers State are now to be certified medically fit before a driver’s license would be issued to them.

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) announced this in a press statement issued in Port Harcourt which was made available to The Tide.

According to the statement, the certification of commercial  drivers would be carried out at the hospitals  and health centres, designated by the National Health Issurance Scheme (NHIS).

The statement further disclosed that the drivers would be tested for blood pressure, blood sugar, visual, equity and colour blindness as well as check for chronic arthritis.

Giving reasons for this development, the corps Asika Achiudoka, said the measure has become marshally imperative because of high rate of accidents and fatality on our roads in recent times.

He appealed to the road users to exercise caution and consideration for other road users to reduce the current figure of 1.6 million deaths in Nigeria.

He believes that the tests and certification for medical fitness would ensure sanity and best practice on the nation’s high ways.
