Kaolin Mining Threatens Power Station In Abia
Valenz Nigeria, the contracting company handling the 132KVA power project in Ohiya, Umuahia, has said that mining activities close to the project site poses a threat to it.
Speaking with newsmen in Umuahia, the site Manager of the company, Mr Samuel Ikemefula, said that the land where the mining activities were carried out was part of the land allocated by the government for the project.
“The major problem we are having is the mining of Kaolin here,” Ikemefula said.
He urged those concerned to stop the act, warning that their activities posed a danger to the successful completion of the project.
According to him, the project began in 2001 but had been delayed due to the lack of funds.
He, however, expressed optimism that the project would be inaugurated in August, adding that the company had commenced pre-commission test on the power station.
When operational, power outage in Umuahia and its environs would be a thing of the past, the manager said.
