Gunmen Cart Away HIV/AIDS Drugs In Edo

People living with HIV/AIDS in Edo State may not get regular supply of anti-retroviral drugs as unidentified gunmen attack a warehouse owned by the state’s Ministry of  Health, and made away with drugs worth several million of naira.

Reports available to The Tide revealed that the gunmen struck over the weekend, and carried away medical supplies meant for HIV/AIDS patients.

It was gathered that the warehouse located on medical stores road, Benin City left one person, suspected to be the security guard dead.

Meanwhile, a United Nations (UN) report, 2011 on global drug abuse shows that Nigeria ranks highest in the prevalence of cannabis abuse in Africa.

According to the reports, 14 per cent of Nigeria’s population abuse cannabis popularly called Indian hemp or Marijuana.

The report further listed Nigeria along with other African countries as one of top users of other illicit drugs like cocaine and heroine.

In a related development, the chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Amanjuru Giyade, says the agency would take legal actions against people who stood as sureties for drug peddlers who have jumped bail.

The NDLEA boss, stated this during a road walk as part of activities line up to mark this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

According to him, 26 drug traffickers were standing trial at a Federal High court in Lagos, including showing others arrested by his men who would soon be charged in court.
