Enugu Assembly Retains Odoh As Speaker
The 6th Enugu State House of Assembly has been inaugurated with Barrister Eugene Odoh, representing Igboetiti East constituency unanimously re- elected as speaker for another four years term.
Also elected as principal officers of the House were the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Chime Oji, representing Enugu North Constituency, Hon Ude Okoye Sunday, Leader of the House, representing Awgu North Constituency and Hon. Theresa Egbo, representing Enugu South Rural Constituency who was re – elected Chief Whip of the House.
The post of Deputy chief Whip went to Hon. John Okwuta, representing Uzo Uwani Constituency.
In his acceptance speech, the Speaker assured the people of the state that the House would take the issue of oversight function very seriously to ensure that funds meant for the ministries and parastatals are judiciously used, adding that the Assembly would also ensure quality representation of the people in the next four years.
Odoh also promised that they would make laws that would impact positively on the lives of the people, saying that the Assembly would also make laws that would strengthen the four point agenda of the State Government, as they would initiate high impact private member bills instead of executive bills alone.
“The Enugu State House would work harmoniously with the State Houses of Assembly in the South East geo political zone with a view to speaking with one voice on issues affecting the zone”, he said.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after their inauguration, member representing Isi-Uzo state constituency, Dr. Emeka Ogbuabor, said the House would work out a legislative framework aimed at taking the entire state to the next level.
The legislative framework, he said, ”are those that would enable the State Government achieve greater impact on social service delivery, such as education, health care services and enhance Public/Private partnerships that will bring about accelerated development and grow the state Gross Domestic Product (GDP)”.
Dr Ogbuabor, a medical doctor stated that since Governor Chime has prioritised social services in his second term, the state lawmakers would help him succeed better by putting in place legislative framework in his directions.
