Bayelsa LG Demands Upward Review Of Revenue Formula

The Southern Ijaw Local Government Council in Bayelsa State has called for upward review of the current revenue sharing formula to enable the local government administration meet its expectations at the grassroots level.

The chairman of the council, Chief Tiwei Idowei, made the in an interview with The Tide shortly after the commissioning of 1.18 kilometer road project by the Nigerian Agip Oil Company at Okpotuwari Community

SILGA boss who faulted the revenue sharing formula, lamented that the present sharing formula does not favour the local government councils, especially the oil producing local government areas, saying the amount received as monthly allocation does not reciprocate the level of development expected in the area, such as Southern Ijaw LG.

He maintained that until the sharing formula was review upward for LGs not much impact would be made by the councils in terms of meaningful projects.

Chief Idowei argued that local government council administration require more funding because of its closeness to the rural communities and the down trodden adding that the inability of the LGA to meet the rural developmental needs of the people due to low revenue allocation was affecting the performance of the councils.

He noted that the upward review of the revenue formula would enhance the development of the grassroots.
