Rivers State Police Command has given reasons why it invited the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Rivers State, Sir Celestine Omehia.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Ben Ugwuegbulam told The Tide in a telephone interview that Barrister Omehia was invited by the police for questioning in connection with the alleged assault on the National President of Trade Union Congress, Comrade Peter Esele during the April 26 governorship elections in the state.

Mr Ugwuegbulam stated that the APGA guber candidate was not in the state as at the time of the invitation but said that Omehia had agreed to report at the State Police Command to answer questions on the allegations levelled against him.

The police image maker, however, said that it was not true that the police in Rivers State arrested Sir Celestine Omehia as being speculated in certain quarters in the state.

When contacted, the Chairman of Publicity of Omehia Campaign Organisation, Mr Barth Emokpari confirmed Sir Omehia’s invitation by the police, adding that his boss would obey the police invitation when he returns to the state.

It would be recalled that the President of Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Peter Esele and members of his entourage monitoring the election in Rivers State were allegedly attacked by political thugs loyal to the APGA gubernatorial candidate, Sir Celestine Omehia in his home town, Ubima in Ikwerre Local Government Area in Rivers State.
