Society Identifies Causes Of Chronic Pelvic Pain – Sogon
The President, Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), Dr Fred Achem, says repeated infections was the root cause of chronic pelvic pain in women.
He told newsmen in Abuja last Wednesday that experience had showed that most complaints of chronic pelvic pain were connected to infections.
He explained that some pelvic pains could arise from a problem in the muscles and bones that form the pelvic, particularly during pregnancy
He said that women of child bearing age that were having such pains needed to be investigated to exclude infections.
“We also can call in our orthopedic colleagues to investigate the bone and muscles to check if something else is happening inside the private organ from those bones that is causing those pains.
He gave some of the symptoms to include relapsing abdominal pain.
“It is like a deep-seated soreness and heaviness; just as if the victim is on fire. It is not like the pain a woman experiences during pregnancy,’’ he said.
“It is repeated infection that are really are responsible for chronic pelvic pain. In chronic pelvic pain, first of all investigate for infections and treat appropriately.
“Investigate for what l call Endometriosis and treat appropriately and of course if there are any sign of pelvic bone involvement, call the orthopedic doctor in.
“These are things with which with the use of good analgesics, you can actually treat.
“Septic environment where the people’s hygiene have not been well taken care of, women do have these repeated infections with discharges, you could have a lot of pelvic pain arising from this group.
“Repeated sepsis from termination of pregnancies, these are things that can bring up this, but in most cases good antibiotics can cover over two weeks or more than that and could be able to treat the cases effectively.’’
Achem explained that those with severe chronic pains might require surgery to return to good shape.
He explained that men usually did not have such pains except back pain, common among farmers.
