Robbers Kill Police Inspector In Enugu
A Police Inspector, Mr. Ellias Ikpo, has been shot dead at Ugwu Onyeama Mine, near Enugu along Enugu-Onitsha Express Way by masked armed robbers numbering over seven.
An eye witness said the robbers shot the police officer at close range about 7am, Saturday, when they searched and discovered his identity card inside his traveling bag, as they attacked a commuter bus in which he was travelling to Onitsha, Anambra State, from Enugu.
It was also gathered that all the passengers in the commuter bus, which they robbed, had appealed to the robbers to spare the life of the security agent since he was not armed and at the same time not on duty.
The robbers were said to have insisted that it was too risky to spare the life of Mr. Ikpo because of his profession and went ahead and shot him dead on the spot.
Until his untimely death, Ikpo was said to be an operative of the Enugu State Command, but was recently posted to the Awka Police Command.
Following his transfer, Ikpo decided to travel to Awka on Saturday to finalise his transfer processes but was unlucky.
The late Ikpo, whose lifeless body was said to have been evacuated by operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), reportedly visited the office of the Anti Robbery Team along Enugu/Onitsha Express way that morning before going to Awka, his new station.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, when contacted, said it was unfortunate that Ikpo was killed in that manner by the robbers.
According to him, efforts would be intensified with a view to fishing out the robbers to face the consequences of their act, to serve as deterrent to others”.
