Deputy Speaker Harps On Team Work

The Deputy Speaker, House of  Representatives, Alhaji Usman Nafada, has called on members-elect to work as a team in order to make laws that would be of benefit to the country.

He made the call on Saturday at the maiden meeting of the 7th Assembly Group (7AG) in Abuja.

Our correspondent reports that the Group was formed by like minds among the members – elect in the House to enable them foster unity, cooperation and progress of Nigeria.

Nafada said that a mutual working relationship between the members – elect was necessary in order for them to improve on the numbers of bills and motions earlier passed by the out going 6th Assembly.

He urged the group to correct whatever the past mistakes made by old members and assist in the efforts to resolve the image problem of the House.

Also, Rep. Farouk Lawal (PDP–Kano) urged the members – elect to work together in order to justify the mandate given to them by the people.

He said the cooperation among members would enable them enjoy majority support for issues any of them might present on the floor of the House.

Lawal, who is returning to the house, called on them to be of good conduct and avoid any thing that would tarnish the image of the House.

‘’ I urge you not to do any thing that will discredit the image of  this institution, we are willing to work as brothers,’’ he said.

Rep. Waziri Tambawal (PDP-Sokoto) also urged the members-elect to improve on the performance of the 6th Assembly.

He suggested that the new law-makers could do this, “by acquiring powerful knowledge of the implementation mechanism of legislature”.

Tambawal also urged members to be tolerant of one another to ensure the sucess of the business of the house.

In his remarks, Rep. Abdulmumin Jibrin, member– elect (Kiru Bebeji Federal Constituency), Kano State, who is the chairman of the group, called on his collegaues to be mindful of the mandate entrusted to them by the people.

‘’ Let us not be taken away by the euphoria of Abuja and forget why we were elected by our people in the first place,’’ he said.

Jibrin cautioned his colleagues to ‘’ look very well ‘’ before signing any agreement with financial institutions and estate developers to avoid falling prey to some transactions.

He also urged the members not to deviate from the manifestoes of their political parties.
