Governor Peter Obi of Anambra has inaugurated caterpillar and road construction equipment worth about N300 million for the State Roads Maintenance Agency.

Speaking at the inauguration, Obi said that his administration had constructed more than 500 kilometres of roads in the last five years.

He said the equipment would enhance effective repair and maintenance of roads in the state.

“These equipment being launched today will help build a better Anambra.

“The money we are spending on some of our projects were received from donor agencies because of their belief that we are doing the right thing,” Obi said.

Government, he added, had executed more projects within the last one year than it did in the previous years.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Works, Mr Callistus Ilozumba, noted that the inauguration of the equipment as well as the State Materials Testing Laboratory marked a paradigm shift in roads construction.

Ilozumba said the investment of more than N49 billion by the state government between 2007 and 2010 in the road sub sector had created wealth and employment for 5,000 people.

“The development of roads network has also resulted in improved access to and linkage of all the 177 communities in the state,” he added.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of the State Roads Maintenance Agency, Mr Nwanne Ejikeme, commended the governor for procuring the equipment.

“We give you our total commitment that we will now go out there and fix bad patches on our roads.

“Our commitment is to ensure that all asphalted roads in the state are free of pot holes and that the earth roads are smooth for the comfort of road users,” Ejikeme said.
