Navy To Defend Nigeria’s Territorial Waters

The Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Adminral Emmanuel Ogbor said that the Nigerian Navy would not compromise the security of the Gulf of Guinea.

Ogbor told newsmen  yesterday in Lagos that the Navy had intensified effort in ensuring the security of Nigeria’s territorial waters.

He said that the navy had upgraded her equipment and personnel through a partnership with the United States of America (USA) station.

‘’The Nigerian Navy has advanced in the security of the Gulf of Guinea with a joint programme with the American station, “ he said.

Speaking on the arrival of 100 naval officers and ratings on board the Robert Bradley ship in Lagos, Ogbor noted that the joint training and interaction would enhance professionalism.

He said that the partnership, which began in 2008 had the maiden team of high speed vessel swift (HSVS) in Nigeria for crossbreeding of military ideas.

Our correspondent reports that the US ship had on board naval officers and men from the USA, Liberia, Cote d’ Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Nigeria as partners in the training.

Kelly Mosteller of the United States navy told newsmen that the crew came for a three-week training and interaction with the Nigerian Navy, under the Maritime Partnership Programme.

“We came with our crew from various countries to experience, interact and share ideas with the Nigerian navy in other to have a cross transfer of skills,” she said.

The Commanding Officer of the US warship, Commander Darryl Brown also said that the team would, within the week, gain and share new knowledge.
