ASUU Urges Nigerians To Be Patient With INEC
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged Nigerians to be patient with INEC over the rescheduling of the 2011 general elections.
ASUU President Ukachukwu Awuzie made the call in a statement issued in Owerri last Tuesday.
He enjoined the electorate to remain steadfast and committed to exercising their franchise during the rescheduled polls.
Awuzie said the union appreciated the difficulty faced by the commission but was optimistic that it would not fail the nation.
“We still believe that it is possible for the commission to conduct a credible election; we must ensure that we vote and that our vote counts,’’ he said.
Awuzie urged the electorate to vote for candidates that were genuinely committed to improving the standard of education in Nigeria.
He added that the nation could rise above the standard of its educational system.
The president advised INEC not to be hasty in its pronouncements or take anything for granted, until a successful conclusion of the elections.
The union urged politicians and their supporters to shun violence and other forms of electoral frauds because the integrity of the nation was at stake.
“Some of the skirmishes that were reported at some of the voting centres remain condemnable and unacceptable.
“This period calls for extra vigilance and resilience from our people; this is an opportunity in a life time and we cannot afford to fail,’’ Awuzie said.
