Boxing Clubs Hold Tourney, March 24

Gloves for Gold Boxing Club, Enugu, in conjunction with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Amateur Boxing Association, is organising a boxing competition between March 24 and March 30 in Abuja.

“The competition is to fish out talented boxers in the country,’’ Emma Nnaji, Secretary, Enugu State Boxing Association, told newsmen lat week in Enugu.

He said that six males and three female boxers in different weight categories would participate in the event.

Nnaji added that three officials — a referee, the chief coach and the secretary would accompany the team to the competition.

According to him, Kogi, Delta, Edo, Benue and Enugu have been invited to the competition.

He also said that boxers, who performed well at the tournament, would be shortlisted for a training tour of Africa and overseas.

The secretary said that arrangements were being made to reward those who excelled with cash and other gifts.

Nnaji said the competition was to access newly-discovered boxers in Enugu ahead of the 17th National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt.

The festival tagged “Garden City Games” will hold from June 29 to July 10 at the new Amiesimaka Adokiye Sports Complex.

Blasé Udeh, Enugu Chief Boxing Coach, said the boxers had already commenced training ahead of the competition.
