Recreation, Sporting Activities, Good For Health – Agwor
Engaging in recreational and sporting activities have been described as a balanced way of promoting a healthy living among youths, especially, students.
This was the position of Engineer Steve Agwor, the chairman of Federal Government Girls College, FGGC, Abuloma’s Parents Teachers Association, PTA during the school’s 36th Annual Inter-House Sports Competition, recently.
According to the chairman, though classroom work was important, sporting activities help the students balance their mental and physical development.
He stated that sports would soon take over as major events in the world and advised parents and guardians not to deny their children/wards the opportunity to explore their talents, especially, in sports.
Also speaking at the event, Alhaji G.Y. Bello, the Director, Basic and Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education Abuja, said that the essence of Inter-House Athletics Competitions was to inculcate team spirit and sportsmanship into the students, as well as promote friendliness.
He said that healthy competition would also aid the students imbibe patriotic values, national unity and prepare them for service to the nation.
In the competition, Lily House emerged overall winner with 200 points while Zinna and Primrose Houses placed second and third with 187 and 185 points, respectively.
Captain of Lily House, Pricillia Nwokocha, who lifted the winners’ trophy said that she was not surprised at her House’s success as they were well prepared for the competition.
She stated that they would not have settled for anything less and that the House under her leadership is poised for greater heights.
Zinna House, which won the 2010 edition promised to wrest the trophy from Lily House in the next edition.
