Gift Willy, a Port Harcourt-based professional golfer, has won the Gambian International Golf Championship, pocketing 5,000 dollars.

A statement by Samuel Emehelu of the Nigerian Professional Golfers Association, said Willy was one of the four Nigerian players who participated in the event at the Fajara Golf Course.

The statement said that he finished tops with two strokes advantage over his compatriots, Umoh Edet and Gboyega Oyebanji.

“I had some aspect of my game improved. It’s definitely my putting and I am swinging perfectly and my putting clearly gave me the edge here,” the statement quoted Willy as saying.

The statement said that at the first round of the event, Willy returned 70, one over par to set himself up for the victory on the 36 holes tournament.

The Gambia’s best ranked player, Kebba Drammeh, said the Nigerian players were experienced.

“They were definitely more calm and experienced and with these innate qualities on the field, they deserved to win,” he said.
