Lagos Govt Pledges Support For All-Stars Tourney
The Lagos State Government has declared its support for the All-Stars Women Football Championship as its contribution to the development of female football in Nigeria.
Agboola Dabiri, Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Council, made the pledge at the National Stadium, Lagos in an interview with journalists at the end of the 11th edition of the championship, recently.
Dabiri said the government through the state sports council would sponsor the tournament as it realised its importance to the development of female soccer.
He listed the benefits of the tournament which included the opportunity to scout for talents for the various clubs in the country as well as the state and national teams.
The sports council chairman donated kits to all the participants, which he said, was the first time the players would be returning home with soccer kits since the tournament’s inception.
He said the donation was the council’s way of encouraging the players and their officials.
“These players are eager to showcase their talents, so we thought it necessary to come to their aid by endeavouring to support this championship yearly.’’
He appealed to parents to allow their children, especially the females to play football as participation in sports contributed immensely to mental and physical development.
