Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has stated his administration’s commitment to entrust more responsibilities on women to enable them actualise their full potentials.

Governor Amaechi stated this on Wednesday during a dinner organised in honour of participants of the regular meetings of the National Women Council at Government House, Port Harcourt.

Governor Amaechi said women had proved themselves to be dependable partners as demonstrated in professionalism and expertise displayed in their various assignments.

Governor Amaechi who was represented by the State Deputy Governor, Engr. Tele Ikuru disclosed that the state developmental policy included tackling basic amenities that pose challenges to the well being of women. This, according to him, included free primary healthcare, free education and good road networks, among others.

The State Chief Executive Officer, who earlier took the women on inspection tour of projects embarked upon by his administration, said the infrastructure in the state promotes investment opportunities, and charged the women to be good Rivers ambassadors and to tell the Rivers success stories in their respective states.

In her speech, wife of the Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi charged the women to live up to their responsibility as change agent and build the home on the path of righteousness.

Mrs Amaechi, who is also the founder of the ESI model nursery school, identified education as the only panacea to tackling poverty and crime in the society, adding that it must be pursued vigorously.

She appealed to government at all levels to consider more women for appointive and elective positions.

Also Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Iyom Josephine Anenih commended the infrastructural development in Rivers State especially in the major sectors that pose threat to women pursuits of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

She called on state governments to step up funding for the Ministries of Women Affairs and Social Development to enable them perform creditably, noting that the Ministry’s activities had direct bearing on the families, less-privileged and the needy in the society.
