The Kaduna State Environmental Protection Authority (KEPA) yesterday warned farmers against establishing poultry farms in residential areas.

The authority’s General Manager, Malam Aminu Sani, told our correspondent in Kaduna that the authority would close down any farm within residential areas.  He said that the law prohibiting the establishment of such farms had been amended and that the agency would soon start implementing the policy.

He added that the implementation of the law became necessary following complaints by members of the public on the menace of such farms within residential areas.

Sani said that such farms were unhealthy and dangerous to human health adding we are moving into a season of still and humid conditions, where residents must be careful about happenings in their   environment,’’ he said.

According to the KEPA boss, the authority had closed such farms in Zaria, stressing that anyone found violating the law would be sanctioned.

He urged those wishing to establish poultry farms to obtain clearance from the authority.

He said that Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) must be considered before permission is granted.
