Athletes from Yaba College of Technology  will commence preparation for the Nigeria Polytechnic Games (NIPOGA) competition on  January 24, an official of the institution said over the weekend in Lagos.

The Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun, will host this year’s NIPOGA Games.

An Assistant Coach in the institution, Olu Akinfolarin, told newsmen that the early training was to ensure that YABATECH  won the Games.

Akinfolarin said the preparation would start with the football team on January 24  while others would commence at a later date.

“Our outing at the last edition of the games in Zaria was fair but this time we want to be the best of all the institutions.

“Early preparation will give us a better chance of winning gold in all the sports,” he said.

The Games will feature more than 12 sports, including football, table tennis, badminton, basketball, athletics, volleyball, scrabble, handball, taekwondo, hockey, chess and long jump.

Akinfolarin also said that sports and education ought to blend together, hence the foresight of the founders of the Games in bringing students from different institutions together for the competition.

“There will be talks to enlighten the students on the importance of education and sports and the need for discipline during the Games,” he said.

He pleaded with the federal government to continue to encourage students to take part in  sports.

Akinfolarin said he was confident that the institution would perform well at the Games.

He said the institution won 16 gold, 10 silver and 18 bronze medals in the last edition of the Games in Zaria.
