Rivers TUC Tasks Govts On Welfare
The Rivers chapter of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has urged the three tiers of government to pay attention to workers’ welfare to ensure development in the society.
The Chairman, Mr Hyginus Onuegbu, made the call in Port Harcourt last weekend in an interview with our correspondent while reviewing congress activities during the year.
He said the union had strived to identify with the civil society groups and religious organisations to see that a better life in the society was achieved.
Onuegbu said “we are not only looking at workers welfare alone, but also the society at large’’.
The union boss said that if government programmes were in line with the interest of the society and workers, “our country would have been developed.
“Our society will be better if workers are benefiting; when there is availability of water and electricity, workers spend less instead of buying water power generators.’’
The congress chairman, however, commended state governments which implement good welfare packages for their workers and urged other states to emulate them.
