Rivers Cyclists Win 6th Garden City Cycling Championship

Victor John and Rita Oveh of Rives State yesterday emerged overall winners of the 6tgh edition of Garden City Cycling Championship held yesterday in Port Harcourt.

The competition, which witnessed the participation of seven other states within the Niger Delta saw Victor John and Rita Oveh clinching first positions with a time of 2 hours 13.36 seconds and 1 hour 51.44 seconds respectively in the male  and female road race event.

Other top finishers include Kalis Becaleb from Bayelsa State and Miebaka  Aggo of  Rivers State, who placed second and Miebaka third respectively in the male road race, while Igwe Fidelix from Delta State and Wayikpe Ifeoma came second and third in the female road race event.

In the mountain bike event, Prince Eregbonda placed first with a time of 1 hr50:09 seconds followed by Igwe Owhonda and David Sunday respectively.

Udeyere Uboh, Chinedu O and Rotimi Adedonin clinched first second and third position within the age of 30 to 39 category.

Veterans of 50 years and above (men) had Latif Aluko, Engiener giandomenica Massari, Vice Chairman of the Rivers State Cycling Association and Kingsley Paul as the top three finishers in that order.

Eammanuel Onosanya, Ericsson and Akpana Iboroma, clinched first, second and third positions as well in veterans’ 40-50 years category.

In the women’s veterans’ category, Joy Nwachukwu, Irine Onosanya  and Ekpene William-Jumbo came first, second and third, respectively.

Certificate of participation and cash prizes were awarded to winners and participants of the championship.

Best young rider, female, was given to Gloria Odise, while best young male rider’s honours were given to Innocent Emmanuel, Okpara Philips and Gabriel Nimiabo.

Others honours were most improved riders award which was awarded to Tonye Kuru-Kurubo, Kingsley Nwo and Freeman Ladison. 

In the race proper, the males raced through 12 laps, females, 10, mountain bike, 10 while the veterans covered three laps.
