PH To Host Open Tennis Championship, February

Rivers State Tennis Association in conjunction with the States House of Assembly Speaker, Hon. Tonye Harry is set to host a one-week tennis tournament geared towards identifying and improving tennis players in the state and beyond.

Chief Coach of the State Tennis Association, Humfery Briggs disclosed this Tuesday, during an exclusive interview with Tidesports in Port Harcourt.

According to him, the competition which was initiated by the speaker Rivers State House of Assembly. Hon. Tonye Harry is going to be an open championship for male and female Tennis players across Nigeria.

The last edition of the tournament was sponsored by Skye Bank and this third edition as expected to be sponsored by the same bank.

Coach Briggs said that, the competition would kick off on the 18th of next month in Port Harcourt, adding that, the competition will also be used to select players that will represent the country in the forthcoming All African Games billed to hold this year in Mozambique.

Speaking on the prizes available, coach said that there may be an improvement on the prize money in order to attract more athletes to the tournament.

He explained that the first edition attracted a cash prize of N200.000 for male winner and N150,000 for female winner, while in the second edition, the cash prizes were increased by N50,000 respectively.
