The new Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Alhaji Omar Suleiman, on Friday, pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor, Malam Abdulsalam Mohammed.

Suleiman made the pledge in Lagos at the handing-over ceremony held at the NPA headquarters. He said that the out-going chief executive was able to sanitise the organisation and sought the support of the workers and management for the success of his tenure.

In his remarks, the out-going managing director said he was confident that the new helmsman would live up to his expectation since they had worked together.

He said that Suleiman was conversant with the issues and the workings of the organisation. “I wish you well and at the end of the day when you fully go through your tenure, you would record successes,” Mohammed said.

The Tide source learnt that the appointment of Suleiman is to allow for internal restructuring and to reposition NPA at the conclusion of the concessioning programme.

The appointment is to also pave way for implementation of the master-plan to develop Greenfield Seaports and Terminals and to pave way for further expansion of port infrastructure that will support the huge inflow of cargoes into the country.

Suleiman is a 1983 graduate of Building Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and obtained a Masters degree in Material and Construction Engineering from University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1988.

He joined NPA as an engineer at the Delta Ports, Warri, in 1984. Suleiman was the general manager, Capital Projects at the NPA headquarters in Lagos before his appointment.

He was at one time Port manager of the Onne Port Complex and has also  served as the NPA representative in London.
