A grassroots sports exponent based in Rivers State, Nicholas Nyoryor, has charged local government chairmen to be more committed in sponsoring grassroots sports.

Nyoryor made the call recently, during an exclusive interview with Tidesports in Port Harcourt.

According to him, should local council chairmen be more consistent in organising sporting activities, it would help in identifying more grassroots athletes for the state in 2011.

“Sports talents start from and are nurtured at the grassroots, if more attention would be given to organising tournament at that level, the state will certainly not lack quality athletes at any time,” he said.

He maintained that there are so many young talents who were yet to be discovered wasting away at the grassroots. He believes that when discovered, they would be very useful in representing the state at any state or national engagement.

Nyoryor, who was the FA chairman of the Bu-Ayeghe Football Council (BUYEFA) continued that it would be better to catch them young when they are still raw and dedicated to their chosen career.

He, thus, urged local government chairmen to consider the youths in their packages, adding that, it will assist in curbing youth restiveness and other anti-social vices as well as giving them the appointment to make a legitimate living.
