Commuters in Enugu will soon start the use of credit cards and coupons to board the coal city shuttle buses.

The Enugu State Commissioner for Transport, Mr John Egbo said this in an interview with newsmen on Thursday in Enugu.

According to him, using credit card to board the coal city shuttle is part of government’s effort at eradicating corruption involving drivers of the buses.

Egbo said that government would inject 30 more buses in the streets to improve night life in the city.

“The card system will help the government to eliminate corruption or misuse of money in the system.

“We want a situation where drivers of buses will stop extorting money from commuters by way of payment of fares,” Egbo said.

The commissioner who was speaking on his vision for 2011, said the state’s mono rail project would soon commence operations.

He, however, promised that the government would ensure that traffic lights, which had been epileptic, would become functional this year.

“The reason why most traffic lights in the coal city are not always functional is because a UPS has yet to be installed to support their operations.

“We will install them this year and will ensure they function 24 hours,” the commissioner said.

Egbo said that his ministry was working toward reducing the cost of housing and rents by opening access to all the areas of Enugu State.

“We want to open roads that were previously closed and this is a year of continuity of good works in Enugu State,” he said.
